Done-for-you email vs DIY Mailchimp in 2026: which fits a busy owner

Write and send it yourself in Mailchimp if you have the time and a small list. Have it written in your voice and sent from your own account if you have a real past-customer list and no time.

I sell the done-for-you option, so this page compares it with doing it yourself in Mailchimp. Short version: write it yourself if you have the time and like it. Hire it out if you have a real past-customer list and the emails keep not happening.

Key takeaways

  • DIY Mailchimp fits if you have time each week to write, a small list, and you like doing it.
  • Done-for-you fits if you have a real list of past customers, no time to write, and want emails in your voice that you approve before they send.
  • You own the account and the list either way. That row is a tie.
  • Your Mailchimp bill does not change when you hire me. You keep paying for the tool; I charge for writing, sending and list care.
  • Not worth switching if your own sends already go out on schedule and get replies.

The decision

You own a local business with a list of people who already paid you. The list lives in Mailchimp, maybe because someone set it up for one promotion years ago. The question is not which software to use. Most comparison pages argue Mailchimp against Klaviyo or another tool. This one is about who does the work: you, writing and sending inside Mailchimp, or someone writing in your voice and sending from the same account after you approve. Either way the software, the bill and the list stay yours.

How I compared

I read Mailchimp's public pricing and help pages and my own published pricing on 2026-10-15. Everything here is documented from those pages. I have not run a side-by-side test, and nothing on this page is marked tested. I do not have client results yet, so there are none here.

Same job, both ways

The job: one email offering fall service to past customers.

Doing it yourself in Mailchimp

  1. Pick a template and write the email: subject, short body, one offer.
  2. Choose who gets it from your audience.
  3. Send now, or schedule it. Mailchimp lists email scheduling on its paid plans, not on Free (pricing table).
  4. Watch for replies and bookings, and decide what to send next month.

Having it done for you

  1. You add me as a user in your Mailchimp account (user levels).
  2. You tell me about the job, the season and the offer. I draft the email in your voice with a unique code.
  3. You approve it or mark changes.
  4. I send it from your account and we look at replies and codes together.

Pricing scenario: 1,000 contacts, four emails in a month

DIY: your Mailchimp plan for 1,000 contacts, plus your own hours. I have not put a dollar figure on either: check Mailchimp's pricing page with your contact count, and value your time at whatever an hour is worth to you.

Done-for-you pilot: the same Mailchimp plan, plus 10% of orders placed within 14 days of a send that carry the email's code, with a written floor of $600 to $1,200. After the pilot, monthly is $1,850 and weekly is $3,900 (pricing).

Switching

Nothing moves. You keep Mailchimp and the list, add me as a user, and we agree on an approval routine and tracking codes before the first send. If you stop, you remove the user. The review and setup are not refundable after work starts.

FAQ

How much does Mailchimp cost for a small business?

Mailchimp lists a Free plan for under 250 contacts and paid Essentials, Standard and Premium plans priced by contact count. The Standard dollar price on its pricing page did not render when I checked on 2026-10-15, so I have left it out. Check the page with your own contact count.

What does done-for-you email marketing include?

Here it means I write short emails in your voice, you approve each one, and I send them from your own account. Ongoing plans add list care and a one-page report. See Mailchimp management.

Do I keep my Mailchimp account and list?

Yes. You keep the account, its bill, the list and ownership of all of it. I work inside it as an added user, and you can remove that user at any time.

Who writes the emails, and do I approve them?

I write them, in your voice, from what you tell me about your jobs and customers. Nothing goes out until you approve it.

How is the pilot priced?

The 4-email pilot is 10% of orders placed within 14 days of a send, tracked with a unique code in each email. There is a floor of $600 to $1,200 depending on list size, agreed in writing before the first send. See pricing.

Can I cancel?

Monthly and weekly plans cancel by email before the next bill. The email review and setup are not refundable after work starts. Pilot terms are on the pricing page.

Start with the 4-email pilot

Four weekly emails in your voice. You approve every one. Each carries a unique code. The floor is set in writing before the first send. If tracking is not in place, we stop. Request the 4-email pilot or call (816) 300-1791.
